Opening Week at the Serpentine Gallery: Garden Pavilion 2012 by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Wei Wei

On June 1st the Serpentine Gallery launched the new Pavilion as the twelfth in the series since the first commission in 2000.

The design is the result of Swiss duo Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese conceptual artist Ai Weiwei’s collaborative work: after designing Beijing Bird’s Nest Stadium for the 2008 Olympics, the joint team realised their first built structure in UK, to celebrate London 2012 Olympics in this extraordinary year, as well as create an ideal bridge between the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games.

Herzog & de Meuron – Ai Wei Wei Serpentine Pavillion

The Pavilion, creating an open public space and a venue for Park Nights, is formed by twelve columns, each representing the 11 past pavilions and the current one, and supporting a floating platform roof.

Memory Marathon Saturday and Sunday 13-14 October 2012

A two-day event inspired by the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, this year’s Marathon will explore memory, archaeological excavation and historical recordings through overlaps and interactions between artistic practice and scientific enquiry.
